In a country where playing in online casinos is now considered an illegal activity, but changes are on the horizon, there is always need for experts in this area. Anthony Cabot is one of the foremost experts on the online casino law in the United States and his opinion is worth a lot to both online casinos and US government.

Cabot worked 23 years with Lionel Sawyer & Collins, Las Vegas' largest law firm. Here, over 50 attorneys work on protecting both players and the casinos. Now, Cabot decided to try something new and became partner with Lewis and Roca's government relations and administrative law practice group, focusing partly on online casinos law. Lewis and Roca is located in Phoenix.

Cabot is a big shot in the offshore and online casinos world. He is the founding member of the International Masters of Gaming Law Association and he wrote and edited several books on gambling law. Throughout his career, Cabot offered his expertise to major Vegas casinos and numerous online casinos and online poker rooms.

The expertise areas of Cabot are threefold: online casinos, sweepstakes and tournament law and traditional casino representation.

A few years ago, Cabot predicted that poker would have large benefits, because it is a game of skill. Many US states prohibit games of chance, but not skill games. He appeared to be right. There's been a liberalization of poker laws in a number of states.

Cabot is a legal counsel to a group called the Poker Players Alliance.  The groups' goal is to make sure that there will be no federal law that will prohibit players from playing poker in online casinos. At this moment, there are some persons in Congress who want to criminalize online casinos and Cabot wants to stop them.

When Cabot was asked in an interview if he thought if online casinos would become legal in the United States in the next couple of years, he said he wasn't completely sure. He explained that Senator Jon Kyl is trying to get a legislation passed that will prohibit online casinos and all other forms of internet gambling. Problem is, that some groups want to be, and in many cases get to be, an exception to this rule. A good example is horseracing. In about 16 US states, it is legal to wager on horseracing from the internet in online casinos. Now, the US lotteries want to become an exception to this rule. They want to be able to sell their tickets over the internet, in their own online casinos. The next group in line is the land-based casinos. They want to be able to start online casinos linked to their brand on the internet, to get some of the money that now goes to offshore online casinos. According to Cabot, it is almost impossible to create Federal Law with so many exceptions. Eventually, the exception will become the rule and playing in online casinos will become legal.
